How many is too many wedding/bridal showers for one girl?
My step-daughter is getting married this year. So far, she has had an engagement party (where she received gifts), a housewarming party (her and her fiance live together), a bridal shower by her mother and a bridal shower by her soon-to-be mother-in-law. Plus, she will have the wedding where people will bring gifts. Is this going a little overboard or am I being too cheap?
Well, here’s the thing: To start off with, it is in poor taste for a member of the bride’s or groom’s immediate family to have a shower for her. That is tacky & a huge no-no! So they have not started things off correctly.
Usually people do not and are encouraged not to bring gifts to an engagement party, so that’s another kind of unusal situation.
A housewarming party is redundant at this point, b/c usually when people get married they register for household items and a lot of couples will be moving into a new home upon getting married. So, don’t know who threw that one, but it was not in good taste either!
Etiquette-wise if a traditional shower (that is a shower that does not have a specific theme, but is meant to be a shower where gifts are chosen from the registry) is held, guests who attend that shower are considered “done” in the gift-giving department; They do not have to give another gift at the wedding.
Guests invited to one shower or gift-giving party should not be invited to another, unless they are immediate family members, or extended family members/bridal party members who specifically tell the bride they want to come to all the showers.
You, as part of the immediate family, technically, should go to most or all of the showers & parties. It would be in good taste to bring a small gift to all of them. If you feel unable to do this or don’t want to do this, then only attend the ones you will bring gifts to.
It does sound like in this case that they have gone a little overboard and have not followed proper shower etiquette.
