What can I do to get rid of fog and condensation on single-pane glass windows?
Our house and windows are 80 yrs old. The windows are all the old pulley and rope system tso they are too leaky to seal with a second pane of glass, but we can barely see outside during the winter due to the fog. Condensation is a problem too and I worry about the wood frames rotting. Any ideas? (Have already tried Rain-X and Gel Gloss with little effect).
Has anyone tried desiccant with any success?
The fogging and condensation is caused by the outside cold air in contact with the glass lowering the glass temperature below the “dew point” of the VERY humid air inside the house.
The windows are “sweating” just like a glass of iced tea or lemonade does on a humid summer day.
There are several solutions, some of which [that I can think of at the moment] follow:
1. Get a big dehumidifier to remove most of the moisture from the living area air. Although this will solve the problem it is VERY UNHEALTHY for the occupants to breath warm dry air in the winter. It severely dries out the nasal and bronhchial passages exposing you to increased chances of colds, flu, and other respiratory infections.
2. Get well fitted, and well caulked, “storm windows” installed on the outside of the old, drafty windows. This also should solve the problem, but usually is VERY expensive!
3. Go to your local big chain home improvement center and buy interior film window “kits” to install on the window’s interior trim, creating a “double pane” effect, keeping the film heated to near room temperature and thus not allowing for condensation on it, AND not allowing the warm, humid interior air to contact the cold window glass.
4. If a “kit” is not available, then just buy some clear plastic sheeting, cut it to fit, and tape it up to the interior trim with Draftsman’s “Drafting Tape” which also can be removed without [usually] peeling off your paint with it.
The kit clear film is attached to the interior window trim with a non-agressive tape that will not peel off your paint when removed in the spring. As a last resort, you could use “Duct Tape,” BUT it MAY peel your paint when removed.
An additional advantage of the storm windows or the temporary interior film is that it will “seal” the window openings from the drafty old windows, and should thus REDUCE your heating costs. Good luck.
