What paints work well on ebony?
My fiance wants to paint the tailpiece on his viola to “personalize” it without affecting the sound quality of the instrument. The tailpiece is real ebony. What sort of paint should he use? Will art acrylics work with a clear coat on top? Should the tailpiece be sanded or primed first? If so, what should he use to prime it without losing the black color of the wood?
I think acrylic artist paint would work or any varnish or good quality paint would work. What I would do is sand the area to give it some tooth so it sticks better to the wood , apply the paint and than put polyutherine on it to seal the paint.
