Serving the sit-down dinner?
We’re doing the norm sit-down catered meal for our wedding with the guests picking their meal when they RSVP.
Do we have to come up with some way for the servers to know which guest gets which meal (ie chicken or beef)?
I thought of this because I went to a wedding a couple weeks ago and they used different sticky rhinestones on the place cards to signal which meal each guest had ordered. For example, my placecard had my name and table number on it and then one pink rhinestone to signal to the server that I had ordered the chicken meal. The guests who ordered beef had two pink stickies, the guests who order vegetarian had three.
Is this necessary?

I was just asking if this was normal practice, I’ve only been to a few weddings and this is the first time I’ve noticed it.
I’ve seen the same thing done at weddings I’ve attended in the past. It’s suppose to be so the waitstaff doesn’t have to ask you what you ordered and they automatically know. However, in my experience, the waitstaff always double checks with the guests at the table once everyone is seated.
In college, I worked briefly at a banquet hall and I was suppose to know what guest was receiving what dinner without having to ask them. Asking them, the banquet manager said, was rude and unprofessional. Although, from time to time, we had to ask. It was better to ask, then have the wrong dish prepared in the kitchen. From a guest standpoint, I understand why it’s better to ask and get it right.
Check with your banquet hall. I say to do it, because it’s better to be safe than sorry. Plus, I’ve been to wedding and sat with people who changed their mind at the last second and wanted beef and not chicken. So having the card makes their decision final and you don’t have to worry about someone changing their mind and wanting beef and not chicken, then being short a beef for another guest.
