Can the engagement ring and wedding band be made of different metals?
I found a wonderful engagement ring with a white-gold band. Since I plan to get a plain band design, I would like to go with platinum since it is considered the best. Is it okay to have a platinum band with a white-gold ring? Or is that considered unattractive or tacky?
I’m not the biggest jewelry buff but the white-gold and platinum look similar. It doesn’t look like they would contrast the way yellow-gold and platinum would. However, I would like to hear from you experts out there. Thanks!
The main difference between white gold and platinum is the work involved with the white gold in the long run. There is no such thing as real white gold, it is yellow gold that is mixed with silver and is rhodium plated. When the rodium plating wears off, the white gold will turn yellow over time. You’ll need to always re-plate the white gold ring (unless you’re okay with it being yellow).
Your other options is to get a “gray gold” (which looks exactly the same as white gold/platinum). This is mixed with palladium (which is in the platinum family). This will not change over time. However, these are much more expensive than a normal white gold ring and not many people make jewelry out of this material.
In the end, it is what you like. I have three different rings that I wear for whatever color I’m in the mood for. I can mix and match, or just go with one ring at a time. It is your ring, do what you want and what feels right.
