What is the difference between seal and rubber stamp?
When I am referring to seal, I do not mean the animal, but a device, an official stamp or symbol used as a means of authentication.
I would like to know the difference between them both as devices and “actions”. By the latter I mean the action of sealing (for example an enevelope) and rubber stamping.
Great question.
Short Answer: A seal is an impression made into something. A stamp is an impression made onto something.
Long Answer: To add more confusion, let me interject that a seal can also be a stamp.
A seal is customarily known as an “official seal”. A seal leaves an impression, and therefore the old wax kind of seal is relevant. The was is not the seal, but the seal is made once the impression is pressed upon the wax. That impression is the seal. Nowadays, common seals are known as embossers, which have an impression and a reverse impression on two die plates that come together, and impress a seal upon (most commonly) paper. That impression is made into the paper, thus making a seal.
A rubber stamp makes an impression to, and in some instances such as Notary Seals, can act as an official seal. The big difference is that a stamp rests upon the surface of what it was stamped upon, and not impressed into that surface.
