Does handwash equal dry-cleaning?
For designer sweaters that say to handwash, do people always dry-clean them? Or do some people literally handwash it like soaking it in a tub? Anybody try putting it in a pillowcase, tying shut pillowcase, and putting it in washing machine?
are there any designer brands or types of fabrics that can be machine-washed?
Actually, many clothing manufacturers put “dry clean only” as a precaution and because they simply can’t be bothered to devote the time and money to research whether their garment can be washed. I’ve hand-washed many of my “dry clean only” garments, including 100% cashmere stuff with no ill effects whatsoever. The key is the temperature of the water: tepid is best and not too much gentle detergent.
I soak it in tepid water for 10 minutes, gently rub and rinse with water of the same temperature. For drying, lay it flat on half a bath towel, fold the towel over and then roll it into a long roll and press it. This removes the excess water nicely. Lay it out flat to dry completely.
