creating swans using pipecleaners, tulle, wire, pantihose, and bedsheets?
my grandmother used to make these when I was little and she sold them to people. I would like to make them but cannot find a pattern. help. She would bend a metal clothes hanger into a circle with a neck shape. then cover it with torn sheets, then over with old pantihose. Then make the body with tulle gathered and affixed to the hanger with pipecleaners. Does this found familiar to anyone? it was used as a decoration in the home. My family used to sit it on the bed during the day for a decoration.
unwind the hanger and straighten it a bit. bend back and forth until the hanger part and the screwy part snap off.
visually divide the piece into thirds.
bend one end toward the middle meeting at the 2/3 popint. crease this sction to come together and bend into a graceful curve of the neck. pince the folded point if needed to shape impression of a bill and head.
with the last one third of the hangar form a circle around to the base of the neck.
set on the bed or a table and bend until the circle supports the head and the head is upright.
Wrap the head with the strips of sheeting or cotton fabric strips.
wrap the bill tight and loosely wrap the head. stuff with poly fibrefill and wrap over again, then wwrap down the neck.
Use white stocking to cover.
NOW….at the fabric store where you buy wedding bridal veil tulle there are bolts of netting with larger holes that are stiffer than tulle.
buy at least four yards.
cut the net into strips eight inches wide
lace the netting onto the circle shape of the hanger back and forth strip after strip until you cant get any more on to the wire.
you can weave the net onto the wire with up to two inches under and six inches of net up. This hides the wire completely.
It will be verrrrry stiff and then with a pair of pliers bend the end of the wire into a small loop to keep the net on.
reshape the circle to appear to close and maintain the circle shape.
to make a bigger swan, use two hangers and twist them together and wrap with fabric.
