Catholic Weddings in Spain
Paperwork for Catholic Weddings in Spain for Non-Residents
Bride and groom have to initiate the necessary paperwork in the parish of their residence.
There they will be requested to provide certain supporting documents/information.
- Certified copies of Official Baptismal Certificates, not older than 6 months
- Photocopies of Birth Certificates
- Certificate of Marriage Guidance/Preparation Course
- Letter of Freedom to marry in the Catholic Church
- Parish, day and time of wedding
The paperwork needs sending to your Bishop where you live with a covering letter stating the date
of the wedding and name and address of the church where you are planning on getting married.
Your Bishop's office then sends to the Bishop's office in Spain from where it is sent to the church.
Ideally the complete set of documents has to be sent to Spain not later than 4-5 months prior to
the actual wedding date.
Should one of the wedding couple not be Catholic, a dispensation has to be requested from their
Bishopric.
The marriage guidance course has to be undertaken in the marrying couple's local parish and must
be duly confirmed in writing by the instructing priest.
After the wedding day the Certificate given you by the church must be presented at the local
registry office for processing.
