Spanish Wedding Traditions
Spanish weddings are usually quite large affairs with whole villages being invited. The average wedding would be around 300
guests but weddings of up to 1000 guests would not be unusual.
In a Spanish wedding service instead of exchanging one large coin they generally exchange 13 ‘arras’ which are decorative
coins and are used to symbolise the sharing of everything between a couple.
Wedding favours are given out at the reception but generally taken around in a basket by the couple and given out individually
to each guest. Traditionally they would receive an envelope with money in it as a wedding gift in exchange.
Spanish weddings do not have speeches at all. The guests toast the bride and groom but without speeches.
The top table is usually just for 6 guests – the bride and groom and both sets of parents.
There are no best man, groomsmen, ushers or bridesmaids at Spanish weddings which explains the smaller top table
