How can I make large plastic forms at home?
I am planning on building a large manually powered vehicle and need to make it as light as possible. I am going to have an aluminum frame but would like the body plates to be made out of plastic as it would be more light weight making things easier for the driver.
Since I’m just building it for myself and not for any sort of mass production I want to produce the body pieces at home on the cheap.
I’ve looked into resin casting as well as other types of molding but most projects seem to be geared towards small projects. I need to be making pieces about one meter by two meters so the plastic needs to be fairly strong. It also needs to have a high enough melting point so it can be heated to about 35 to 40 degrees (the maximum temperature that the sun could heat it to here)
a substance which dries clear would be useful but it would be ok if it were necessary for the windows to be made of glass.
Why don’t you try resin bonded fiberglass. It sets at room temperature, can be shaped by hand, and it’s cheap. That’s why they started building Corvettes out of it. They wanted light, inexpensive to produce in small quantities.
