White Eifel
What spider is this?!?

I live in the Rhineland-Palatinate state in Germany in the Eifel Region. I noticed a huge spider about the size of a quarter in our bathroom with a huge abdomen, fairly long black/white legs and who knows what else. I didn’t want to get closer to look. My husband said he could see the fangs. Does anyone know what type of spider this is or if it is dangerous? Or maybe where can I find spider information specific to Germany? All the web resources are for the U.S. We caught it in a plastic container and threw it in the trash outside.

You’ll almost always be able to see the chelicerae – the “fang-holders” – but usually not the fangs themselves unless you’re looking very closely and it’s a big boy. Anyway, my first guess would be that it’s likely to be one of the big Jumping Spiders. It’s hard to be very specific when there’s so little to go on, but these or the wandering hunters tend to be the most likely to draw the attention, and black-and-white color patterns and specific mention of the fangs makes me think Salticid
The links go to a couple of excellent websites giving photos of many of the spiders of Europe. Your best bet is probably to see what sort of spider looks most like what you had (specifically, body shape, eye arrangement (if you noticed) and how the legs were arranged) and focus on that type of spider. Based on your description, it doesn’t sound like any of the more dangerous kinds of spiders, so you’re OK there.
